What Is Smart Payment Routing
Smart routing means every deposit goes to the provider where that particular card has the best chance of approval, and if it’s declined it automatically moves on. Here is how it differs from basic routing and why it can’t simply be copied.
Basic routing vs smart routing
Basic routing is a set of simple rules: Germany, cards, first deposit — to provider A. Smart routing adds data on how specific banks perform through specific providers and takes the player’s own history into account.
It solves three problems at once: more successful deposits from the same traffic, lower payment costs and less dependence on a single provider.
What it’s made of
- Cascading — a deposit gets several chances if the first provider declines it.
- BIN routing — the card goes straight to where its bank has the best approval rate.
- Sticky routing — a player’s repeat deposits go where they’ve already succeeded.
- Provider requirements — each provider has its own rules for first and repeat deposits, and routing has to respect them.
Why you can’t copy it
Each part only works on your own data. The bank × provider matrix can differ fundamentally between two operators in the same market. A cascade set up without regard to decline codes and scheme rules does more harm than good. Badly configured sticky routing keeps players with a provider that has broken. And breaking a provider’s first-deposit rules is a direct route to a fine.
On top of that, everything keeps changing: providers switch acquirers and channels, and yesterday’s best route stops working. Smart routing isn’t a one-off setting but an ongoing, data-driven process.

In short
How is smart routing different from cascading?
Cascading gives a payment several attempts after a decline. Smart routing decides in what order and to which providers those attempts go, based on data about the card’s bank and the player’s history.
Is smart routing worth it for a small project?
Yes, if you have more than one provider. How much to set up depends on traffic and data: it makes sense to start with what will have the fastest effect in your case.
